It depends on the extent of the testing you want to carry out. You can direct a domain you own to MX Layer gateways to test mail traffic on that domain. Alternatively, you can use a test domain name, which would not require any DNS changes.

You can explore inbound and outbound security features as well as archiving. For inbound testing, you have the option to direct your own domain to MX Layer or use a test domain provided by us. For outbound testing, you can set up a smart host rule to forward emails from your mail system to MX Layer servers or send emails using the provided test domain. Archiving will also be available upon request, requiring no additional setup, as it automatically archives emails at the gateway level. Journal-based archiving can also be configured in Microsoft Exchange and Office365 environments.
